When appropriating imagery, especially for art that will be reprinted or distributed, you have to be careful to use images that are not copyrighted. However, for educational purposes (since the images will not be distributed), images off of Google can be used since it's unlikely that they will be seen. Otherwise, images without copyrights can be found or bought. Consequences for using others' imagery includes a fine or time in jail.
The background was originally an empty room, with the exception of the green plant in the background (next to the sofa). Using other images found online, I filled it with things that reminded me of both my old, and new home, because I recently moved. The furniture is similar to the furniture found in both of my homes, while the smaller things (flowers, fruits, etc.) are decorations that my mother always included in her home. For the furniture, I added drop shadows or altered the color slightly to make it suit the room more. I added texture and a stroke to the flag and the painting, to make them both look more like actual framed paintings. The quick selection tool made this project much easier, and I found it very helpful. If I were to start over, I would use more images from home in order to give the project a more realistic look.
