In the article, "visual language" is referring to the significance that the typography has and the character that it creates, while "verbal language" is the literal meaning of words or phrases. Visual language is more connotative and is up to interpretation, while verbal language is definite and denotative. The British Battleaxe tea towel design that contains a quote from a lead character in a BBC sitcom uses font and size to relay a certain message, making it a great example of visual language. Words with emphasis are enlarged, while the word "your" is slightly smaller than everything else. This shows the importance of her and her desires ("I want" and "my" are very large), and the insignificance of the person who she is talking to in comparison. The font and script also make me think of the speaker in a certain way, which shows their connotative meaning. According to the article, typography can be used to communicate tone of voice, personality, age, gender, and mood.
